With five games to go, the Women’s Super League title is still undecided and looks like it will go down to potentially the final game of the season.

7-time winners Chelsea currently sit at the top on 43 points.

Manchester City, who’ve only won the honour once sit second, also on 43 points, after their 3-1 derby win over the weekend.

The title has ran away from Arsenal, they currently sit 6 points adrift from City and Chelsea.

The final run into the end of the season will be tight with both Manchester City and Chelsea playing similar teams in their final 5 games. Liverpool, Bristol City, and Aston Villa could be big players in deciding where the WSL title goes by the end of the season.

Manchester City manager Gareth Taylor predicts that the WSL title will end up going down to the wire. ‘’The WSL title always seems to go down to the final game; I don’t see it being anything different this season.’’ Taylor has received a fair amount of criticism in his time as City manager from fans and hopes he can end the 8-year WSL title drought this season.

This will be Emma Hayes’ last season in charge of Chelsea, and she wouldn’t mind finishing it with a few trophies to add to her already long list. Having already won six WSL titles, a seventh is very much still on the table in this heated battle with City.

Fixture congestion could work out in City’s favour since they’ve been knocked out of all domestic cups. Chelsea on the other hand still have the Champions League, FA Cup and Conti Cup to focus on as well as the league. Gareth Taylor’s side will have just the 5 fixtures to go whereas Chelsea potentially up to 11 games to fulfil before the end of the WSL season if they were to progress in their cup competitions. Recovery will be crucial for Emma Hayes’ side if they’re to compete for the quadruple.

The WSL title will be tight and either team could miss out by fractional amounts which is no different from the last 5 years. There’s increasing pressure on Hayes to go out with a bang. Can Taylor capitalise on this and win his first WSL title?
