The international break has come to an end, let’s look back over the last couple weeks of action and see the key games that defined the March International break.

USA 2-0 Mexico

The only trophy to be handed out during this break, the USA continued their undefeated streak over Mexico in a hotly contested final, with Giovanni Reyna running the show and showing just how big the gulf is between the two countries.

After Tyler Adams opened the scoring for the Americans, thanks to a Weston Mckennie assist, the aforementioned Gio Reyna managed to bag a goal of his own after continued pressure.

Mexico thought they had a penalty to make the last 10 minutes interesting, but VAR ruled that out and substitute Santiago Gimenez saw himself booked for simulation.

The game was unfortunately paused for discriminatory language twice in the dying minutes, but the full-time whistle eventually came for Mexico, and their multi year wait to get the better of their American foes goes on.

Georgia 0(4)-0(2) Greece

Over to Europe now, and heartwarming scenes in Tbilisi as Georgia qualified for the first major tournament in their history with a nervy penalty shootout against Greece.

After they eased past Luxembourg 2-0 in the semifinal, many had written them off against the Greeks who smashed Kazakhstan 5-0 in their first-round game.

However, the Georgians defended bravely against the Greek attacks, and had a few chances of their own through superstar Kvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Atlanta United’s Giorgos Giakoumakis missed the crucial penalty at 3-2 down in the shootout, meaning Lech Poznan’s Nika Kvekveshkiri could and would hit home to send Georgia to Germany this summer, where they face a tough group in Portugal, Turkey, and Czechia.

Canada 2-0 Trinidad and Tobago

Now, back to North America for the final game and another country achieving a first in their history, Canada have reached their first ever Copa America.

They had a play off against Trinidad and Tobago after they lost in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Nations League on away goals to Jamaica.

A nervy first half for both teams was followed by a dominant second half for the Canadians, and the pressure eventually paid off with Cyle Larin breaking the deadlock, before Nashville’s Jacob Shaffelburg put the game beyond doubt to break Trinidadian hearts.

The Canadians wont have to travel too far for this tournament with USA hosting in a special World Cup preparation edition of the competition which included both South and North America.

Canada goes into Group A, and will play in the opening match against World champions Argentina on 21st June. Followed by a match versus Peru and finishing off with Chile.
